Interlochen Arts Camp Theatre Overview

[Music and singing] Students come to Interlochen to study
theatre because they have a real passion to express themselves. They have stories that they want to tell. And they want to acquire the craft to help them tell those stories as clearly and powerfully as possible. I think coming to Camp
unlocked a new path in my life that wasn’t possible before. I grew up in these woods. I first came here when I was 11-years-old and I immediately fell in love. [Music] Good afternoon and welcome to the Theatre Arts department at Interlochen Arts Camp! [Cheering] I think something really amazing happens
when our theatre students all arrive right at the beginning of Camp and they
realize that they are in a theatre with 200 of their peers and they are all here
to do the same thing. And you a part of an ensemble of hundreds of
theatre artists who will collaborate and work together to create a unique season
filled with a wide range of titles and genres. So welcome to theatre. They are passionate about their craft. They’re passionate about the art form of theatre. And they are really eager to move on to the next steps in their training. This is the metaphor for rehearsal. You know it’s easy to feel in a big place like this that you’re not being seen or not being heard and I think something that
Interlochen provides is small enough class and and enough attention to really
have one-on-one focus with you—if you want it. These are just so such small
things they’re just gonna make it so much yummier. [Cheering] Our Junior theatre program is all about exploration We like to bring in our youngest artists
here and they have an opportunity to explore musical theater, a repertory
theatre production, or a young actors workshop based on improvisation and exercises. The Intermediate theatre program is based on building tools in
these young performers. A student who comes here for intermediates may be involved in intermediate theatre ensemble where they devise an original work. Intermediate acting intensive where they work on scenes and monologues
specifically chosen for them. Intermediate acting company production
which puts on a play which could be something like Winter’s Tale or Radium
Girls. And Intermediate musical theatre production where they would do a
full-scale musical such as The Drowsy Chaperone or Sunday in the Park with George. We have many Camp theatre programs here for high school age students. In our core Camp program we have two six week
productions: our high school musical theatre production which could be
something like Evita or The Music Man or 9 to 5. And then we do our six-week high school
repertory theatre production. Fifteen minutes til places! Which be a title such as Alice or a
Shakespeare production such as Henry V. Also for high schools we have our
three week programs. We have our high school contemporary musical theatre showcase where students come to really focus on newer material in musical
theatre or the musical theatre review where students can come and work on
Broadway standards and classics. We also have programs in acting for the camera and theatre improvisation as well as design and production. Interlochen prepares you for life in the arts but it also prepares you for all the kind of
life and social skills that you need in order to be a good human being. So I’ve learned how to go after what I want I’ve learned how to take initiative I’ve
learned how to be fierce I’ve learned how to be strong I’ve learned how to
inform my own opinions on things so I have learned many many skills here at
Interlochen that go beyond art. I’ve learned how to also be a good person. Students come to Interlochen thinking that they will receive excellent
training and participate in very strong productions. What they don’t realize is
how much they change on the inside and how much they discover about themselves
and what they can offer for it to their chosen art form. [Music]
