Exploring Ford’s Theatre – The Place Where Abraham Lincoln Was Shot and Died – Washington D.C.

Welcome to Ford’s Theatre Today we are inside Ford’s Theatre. We are going to check out the museum, theatre and the home where Abraham Lincoln died. That’s Mary. President Lincoln’s wife and she was sitting next to him when he got shot. Tad was one of Abraham Lincoln’s 3 sons and he did some crazy things. Once he hitched goats to a wagon and pulled them around the east wing of the White House. Another time during a state meeting he stood behind Abraham Lincoln and flew a Confederate Flag back and forth And another time he stood at a staircase leading to all the work rooms where all of the congressmen went. He charged them 5 cents fee to go up the stairs. Booth entered the presidential box through a door directly behind Lincoln and from just 6 inches behind him he shot the president in his head right behind his left ear. So President Lincoln was sitting over here and Mary was sitting in a chair next to him watching the show. Turns out this theatre was having a comedy play that evening. And the President was in the mood to relax that night. after all that war He decided he was going to take his wife to come see the play So on April 14, 1865 A few weeks prior the Civil war had just ended The north had won. So with all that war President Lincoln wanted to celebrate. So did the whole city. They were shooting off fireworks So for a little relax time he decided to come here. So about lunch time earlier in the day They found out he was coming and so the theatre owner ran up to the attic to get a bunch of flags and picture of George Washington and he put it there to make is really special for Abraham Lincoln So Booth has been an employee for the theater for a long time. And it’s a very funny play So he barricades the door and he waits for the funniest line in the whole play Then he takes his move He comes in a sees Lincoln He jumps down He’s actually hanging from the American Flag. When he jumps down he actually breaks his leg. All of a sudden this new character comes on stage and waves around a dagger with blood on it. And he says 3 words “sic semper teranus” It’s a Latin phrase and it means He was basically calling someone a tyrant. What is a tyrant? A tyrant is a phrase for an evil ruler or person who’s in charge. That person was trying to call Abraham Lincoln a tyrant. He was like the one person in the whole theater that didn’t like President Lincoln. Because he thought slavery was a great thing. He was mad at Lincoln for having put a stop to it. He runs out the back door. and into the forest And then he got caught 12 days later maybe. So they did catch him. They knew it was him. That’s good! We are heading across the street where the took Lincoln. They thought President Lincoln deserved to die somewhere prettier not gross like that theater was. So they took him across the street to a house. There are 3 rooms you can walk through. After an elevator it will take you to more exhibits and tell you what happened after the assassination. Every single book in that stack is about Abraham Lincoln because he is so famous. I hope you enjoyed this video. Bye! If you want to see the real hat that Abraham Lincoln wore go to the National Museum of American History. You will see the real top hat I promise to protect the National park sit The national historic sites here in Washington and Ford’s Theater. YES! Very good
